Bios Mod.

Im looking through the BIOS utilities and i have a few issues.

For one i dont know what the BIOSes name is so i cant access it.

For two i have no intention to mess up my BIOS.

Three, what utility can i use to extract my BIOS. I need this because there isnt a place i can get it. Not even the manufacturers site. I want to make a backup before even accessing my BIOS because i know that can mess it up.

And last but not least, is Pheonix-Award the same as Award only (like in the warnings in the utilities thread "USE FOR AWARD BIOSES ONLY")..

Watch as your motherboard posts, usually that's where you can find the exact name / version of your bios

What motherboard do you have? Make, Model

For two i have no intention to mess up my BIOS.

You don't have to have a intention to mess it up to actually mess it up. Just flashing the bios can cause problems. In all my experience, modding the bios only caused a problem in .5% of the time. Usually operator error comes into play and causes the problems.

Three, what utility can i use to extract my BIOS. I need this because there isnt a place i can get it. Not even the manufacturers site. I want to make a backup before even accessing my BIOS because i know that can mess it up.

You can use whatever utility it is you use to flash the bios. After you reply with what make and model the board is we can go from there.

And last but not least, is Pheonix-Award the same as Award only (like in the warnings in the utilities thread "USE FOR AWARD BIOSES ONLY")..

Phoenix bought out Award quite a few years ago and the tutorials were made before that time. So any new system with a Award bios will be covered by the tutorials. If in doubt post the question and I will do my best to help you find out

Ok well i got some CPU-Z shot of the Mainboard Section. I know the manufacturer is Chaintech. Im guessing the board is this board. It seems that they now have a BIOS for me so it looks like om in bussines. I downloaded it. But in the Bios Utility Section there it does not have a utility.

OMFG. WTF do i do with this? (new pic)

Well Chaintech seems to use the Alt-F2 method of updating the bios but you could use Awdflash 8.23F to save a copy of your current file.

Just google for awdflash 8.23F and find a download for it.

Seems you got the Taiwan version of the bios file.

Well i thought it meant Taiwan was the download location but it was the only one there. So im guessing there isnt an american version. Whats the chances that the one i downloaded is in Japanese.

For a full screen logo it is 640x480 256 color limitation.

If it is a Award bios you can use Cbrom.

I know the links here are dead for the utilitys and tutorials but you can get Cbrom from my site Here

Just look under bios modification tools and it also has a tutorial for it.

It will as Award and Phoenix are the same now.

cpu-z is not the best information utility for bios's.

Ok i went back to Chaintech and got the BIOS for the board without OnBoard LAN (which mine does not have). Seems to be a archive where there was a .BIN file in. That is my bios. But since there isnt a tool and it is just a .BIN file ill have to flash it with a tool right? If so any recomendations?

Oh and this is extremely touchy for me. The Video card was one thing since i have like 10 here. I dont have too many floppies and no more Socket A mobos laying around.

Well Awdflash is built into the bios file.

When you boot with that file on a floppy and hit Alt-F2 it will automatically start the flash sequence.

If you want to save the file or flash using a utility just download Awdflash 8.23F as I stated and use that.

Using Awdflash the command line would look like this

Awdflash 7via1524.bin /Sy /Pn

That line would save the file to the floppy without writing the bios over.

Now if you want to flash the bios using Awdflash just use the following command line.

Awdflash 7via1524.bin /Sn /Py /CC

the CC will clear the CMOS and you will have to re-enter all the settings in the bios so make sure you write them down BEFORE flashing the bios.

I would stick with 8.23F as that is the one Chaintech is using in the bios.

Hold your horses there partner, You should never try and use Awdflash from any Windows OS.

Awdflash was meant to run from a bootable floppy using DOS as the OS.
