Computer shutting off

I'm working on a customers rig and I can't seem to pin down the exact problem.

It has an Elite Group K7S5A motherboard and an AMD Althlon XP2000 processor.

As soon as you flick the switch on the PSU to 'On' it will power up the rig. But within about 2 seconds it flips off. Then after around 5 seconds it starts and does the same thing.

I've tried a ton of things.
  • New PSU
  • New RAM
  • Cleared CMOS overnight
  • Unhooked all HDs, CD-Roms, Floppys
  • Remounted HSF
I've had it fire up and stay on and actually boot windows about twice now. It will shutoff within about 3-5 hours though even then.

So I have come to the conclusion that the PWM control on the motherboard must be FUBAR. Sounds like it's time for a new mobo. Can anyone think of anything else?

Change the CMOS battery. See if that helps. My PC doesnt come on like that one if you shut it down and try to turn it on again. When did his PC start to do this and did he do something that could have messed it up.

Started like two weeks ago. According to him he didn't do anything to it.

I'll try that battery, thanks.

Big negative there. Remounted it too. CPU looked like it was in good shape, no burnt pins or anything.

Someone came to me with that problem once. Weren't willing to spend any money to fix it. So I used my ghetto skills. Soldered the PS-ON rail to an on/off switch to ground. So they switch the switch when they need it on, turn it off when they need it off. Works kinda weird, but what do you expect for $0.
